A great new initiative for those with Parkinson’s.
Exercise is recognised as one of the best ways to manage Parkinson's.
If you are interested in playing football, making new friends and sharing common experiences with others who have Parkinson's in a friendly environment then Fighting Fit Football could be for you.
Nick Light writes, Following my own diagnosis aged 45 I have been determined to fight the disease through regular exercise and Fighting Fit Football is my way of helping others to do this. Although we expect players to be predominantly from the Young Onset of Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD) community (ie: diagnosed with Parkinson’s under the age of 50) there is no age limit and both men and women are welcome.
Based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, we are a friendly and supportive community team whose aim is to encourage people to play football irrespective of their ability. It doesn’t matter whether you play regularly or used to play in the past, are a newbie or just fancy a kick about, everyone is welcome to play. We play indoors at Watford FC's training dome near junction 22 of the M25.
We currently have 6 players with Parkinson’s in the team including myself, age range 40 to 60 (plus others who support the training), and are looking to expand this number.
We are currently training for the inaugural Cure Parkinson’s Cup which is a fully inclusive football tournament organised by Sport Parkinson's CIC to encourage people with Parkinson's to exercise, to be held on April 19th 2020 in Worcester at the Sixways stadium. There will be 20 5-a-side teams from all over the UK, USA and Europe, and so is a great opportunity to meet others with Parkinson’s, get fit and raise funds for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust’s vital medical research via our fundraising page.
The What to Expect section on our website (www.fightingfitfootball.co.uk) explains our approach and ethos of our training sessions. Typically a session will last 1 hour and comprise a short warm up, training and drills, team challenges (similar to Soccer AM’s "You Know the Drill") and small group matches.
Together we can give Parkinson’s the boot!
