SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 1996 F. A. CUP 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND.
ST ALBANS CITY V LONDON COLNEY (The match was officially a home match for London Colney).
SUNDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER; THE NEXT GENERATION - SAINTS YOUTH MATCH REPORTS:
The City Youth making a winning start to the season and they carried on from the previous season 1995-96 which ended with the Under 18's West being crowned the County Cup winners which saw them led by Manager Jeff Lawrence and Coach Mark Clark.
This season's Under 18's continued their winning ways last Sunday with a 4-1 away to Hemel Youth with Antonio PEPE, who played for 30 minutes for the 1st team last season in their draw against Chelmsford in the Eastern Floodlight Cup scoring two goals. The other two goals in the 4-1 win came from Brett HOSSACK and Ian HAMBLEM.
Highest scorers of the day were the Under 17's who travelled to and annihilated Chorleywood 12-0 with Marc FARROW having a day to remember by scoring 6 of the goals. The scorers were Ross TAIT 2, Phil TURNER, Russell McCALLUM, Sam LEDGER and Luke SNOW.
Also playing in the League Cup were the Under 15's West who made the most of a hat-trick from David NICHOLLS when winning 6-2 away to Riverside AFC. Adam GARDEN also grabbed a couple of goals and new signing Dominic COLLINS marked his debut with a goal from the edge of the penalty area.
The second of three City Youth sides to get into double figures last Sunday were the Under 14's who saw Croxley Guild away 10-0 despite being only 3-0 up at half time. The home side could not contain Chris GOODIER and Daniel TANSLEY as both scored second half hat-tricks. The rout was taken into double figures with further goals from Kevin COULSON 2, Andrew CLARKE and Giles SMITH. The most bizarre goal of the day was scored by Kevin Coulson who claimed one of his two goals whilst wearing the goalkeeper’s jersey.
Another player starting the season with a hat-trick was Greg DEACON whose treble laid the foundation for the Under 13's to trounce Chiltern United 8-2 in the League Cup. Dean PARSONS chipped in with a brace and there were singles in Oliver FRANKS, Russell POPPLEWELL and Peter HANSON during this emphatic away win.
SHADES OF BILLY MINTER: Top individual scorer on the day Jonathan SMITHERS who marked in his debut for the City Youth Under 12's East during a Group A Red, White and Blue Shield match with 7 goals. Unlike the Saints record goalscorer Billy Minter who scored seven times in a F. A. Cup tie yet still finished on the losing side young Jonathan Smithers was on the winning side as the Saints won somewhat convincingly 11-2 against Hemel Celtic. The remaining four goals were shared by Sam PARRETT, Luke TARRANT, Scott TIMMINS and Joe McCARTHY.
The winning streak was maintained by the 12's West who defeated Comet Reds 2-1 in Group C of the Red, White Blue Shield. First half goals from Allister COLLINS and Robert WISE, the latter on his debut put the young Saints in command and they could even afford the luxury of missing a twice taken penalty.
In Group B of the Autumn Cup saw the City Youth Under 11's won 3-1 away to Radlett Rangers with a couple of goals from Raonull McKINNON and a single from new signing Paul BRAME.
The Under 10's East made a very impressive debut in the League Cup with a 8-0 victory away to Sun Postal Pumas. Proving to be a cut above the opposition was Harry HUNT who notched five goals of the young Saints goals. Joe BRAME with a brace and Adam STANLEY added to the home team’s misery.
Making it a clean sweep for City youth last weekend were the 10's West who accounted for Woodhall Wanderers Blue in Group F of the League Cup. Robert BATTERSLY and Tom BARNARD scored the goals which ensured a winning start to the for all ten of the St Albans City Youth sides in action. Well done Boys, keep it up.
